Data collection from the fishery

Last changed: 05 September 2012

According to the EU, national authorities are obliged to collect relevant data to assess the fish resources and the fishery industry in the sea.

What about the fresh waters? The Swedish agency for marine and water management [Länk till HaV:s engelska hemsida] are responsible for the data collection of the most important commercial fish stocks in Swedish freshwater systems. The department of aquatic resources, SLU, collects these data by test fishing, hydroacoustics and trawling and from fishermen. The data collection is used as a basis for sustainable management. This information requires scientific judgment of the exploited fish stocks regarding abundance and development.

For commercially important species, data on age, size, sex and maturity are collected. Age determination is fundamental for stock assessment, as most methods for analysis are based on age classes or cohorts.
