Portrait of Irene Hjort.

Where do moose and roe deer choose to be during different parts of the year? Irene Hjort has looked into this in her thesis.

Who am I?

I am Irene, 29-year-old and mother of a 1-year-old daughter, living in Jämtland and are doing my last year at the Master program for Science in Forestry. This last year I am doing at the Department of Wildlife, Fish and Environmental Studies at SLU in Umeå.

What is your Master's thesis about?

It´s about habitat selection by moose and roe deer. I take a closer look at where they chose to be during different parts of the year.

My result showed that access to forage is a very important factor when it comes to habitat selection, except for during the rut in moose.

Why did you choose that topic?

I am very interested in animals and nature from a holistic perspective. Add the fact that I am a hunter from the north of Sweden and it is not that strange that I have a high interest in ungulates.

How did you experience your time as a student at our Department?

Extremely fun an incredible good treatment when I needed to bring my daughter to school, wonderful!

What's happening next?

Now I will be doing a Master´s thesis in forestry about the movement patterns in moose during rut, also at the Department of Wildlife, Fish and Environmental Studies.
