Scientific Writing for PhD Students

The course is built on lectures and own material and the topics to be coved are divided into four parts:

• Writing an essay/paper

• Plagiarism rules

• Submission stage

• Manuscript revision

The first part will focus on the individual elements and sections of a research paper starting from its title, abstract, keywords, possible acknowledgements and moving to introduction, the main body of the paper consisting of the theoretical or conceptual model, the empirical model, description of data, analysis of results, the conclusions, the references, footnotes, and tables and graphs. The context of these sections will be given for different types of papers, such as theoretical papers, empirical papers, literature review papers, notes and comments. This will be practiced in PhD students own manuscript.

The second part will deal with the problem of plagiarism and will present and discuss plagiarism rules

The third part will provide general guidelines for first selecting the appropriate outlet/journal for submitting a research paper and then for preparing the manuscript by effectively utilizing author guide information regarding presentation style

The last part will focus on the process of revising and resubmitting a manuscript by providing guidelines for preparing response letters to referees and editor(s) as well as revising the manuscript itself.

Mål

The objective of the course is to provide detailed guidelines for preparing a research paper using own research material that may be part of a PhD thesis or independent work. Special emphasis will be placed on papers in social sciences.



On completion of the course, the student will have improved his/her ability in:

• writing different types of research papers, such as theoretical papers, empirical papers, literature review papers, research notes and comments;

• demonstrating capacity to choose the appropriate outlet for his/her research work;

• preparing the manuscript for the chosen outlet;

• identifying, analyzing and critically reflecting on scientific papers through replying to referees/editor comments and suggestions and revising accordingly his/her manuscript.

Examinationsformer och fordringar för godkänd kurs

Preparation and presentation of a manuscript of a research paper that will be judged by its context and not its originality
- Om studenten inte blivit godkänd på ett prov har examinatorn rätt att ge en kompletteringsuppgift – om det finns skäl för det och om det är möjligt.
- Om studenten har ett beslut från SLU om särskilt pedagogiskt stöd på grund av funktionsnedsättning, har examinatorn rätt att ge ett anpassat prov eller låta studenten genomföra provet på ett alternativt sätt.
- Om denna kursplan ändras, eller om kursen läggs ner, ska SLU besluta om övergångsregler för examination av studenter, som antagits enligt denna kursplan och ännu inte blivit godkända.
- För examination av självständigt arbete (examensarbete) gäller dessutom att examinatorn kan tillåta studenten att göra kompletteringar efter inlämningsdatum. Mer information finns i utbildningshandboken
