GIS and Geographic Analysis

Welcome to the all-inclusive course on Geographical Information Systems and Geographic Analysis TN0329.

The aim of the course is to present geographical information system (GIS) as a tool for planning, implementing, and presenting real-world projects of geographic dimensions. Applied on vectorised as well as rasterized information, the course contains elements of cartography, geodesy, positioning techniques, database techniques, international map-base standards, and international law.

The course is principally problem based (CASE-based), with geographic information systems being taught within the context of group-wise performed project studies. The projects will address current issues within adequate disciplines of free choice, and stimulate students to work with all the necessary steps from data collection to geographic analysis and map-based presentation of project reports. The students will also be taught to critically evaluate the possibilities and limitations of computer-based geographic analysis.

In parallel with CASE projects, the education is internationally web-based where geographic information systems are taught via problem-based computer exercises (web courses). The course combines mandatory exercises with the possibility of adding personally profiled web courses. With teacher guidance, the web courses are chosen to cover topics that range from data capture to geographic analysis, and design of traditional as well as web-based maps. Each exercise is examined at the web, where the resulting certificate is internationally valid.

Please visit the TN0329 web-site to examine our supply of web-courses, and to learn how they may be combined at different levels of examination.

Betygskriterier

Examination criteria and deadlines - TN0329 2022
Criteria definitions

Criteria Project

The Criteria for the Project work has only one grade level: 3 (Passed). Note that the Project work requires attendance and participation within the course time frame. Failing in fulfilling the Project criteria cannot be compensated for until the next course starts.

Grade

Criteria

3 (Passed)

- Grade level 3 achieved in Criteria Exercises latest Fri November 25 2022.

- Attendance in project initiation classes

- Project curriculum handed in latest Fri November 25 2022, and approved.

- Oral on screen presentation (PowerPoint or similar) prepared and presented in scheduled class for project presentations and opposition (attendance required)

- Oral opposition on another group's project work (oral and written) prepared and presented in scheduled class for project presentations and opposition (attendance required)

- Final written project report handed in latest Sun January 22 2023, and approved.

- Active participation in the project work together within the assigned project group in planning, meetings, work, presentation (written and oral) and opposition

- A working copy of the project report handed over to the opposition group no later than one week prior to oral presentations and oppositions (alternatively in accordance with your own bilateral arrangements). A list of project group participants, including email addresses, is published in the course Canvas room.

Criteria Theory

The Theory Criteria is examined with the written exam.

Grade

Written exam score

5

At least 88 % of total score (44 out of 50)

4

At least 66 % of total score (33 out of 50)

3

At least 44 % of total score (22 out of 50)

Criteria Exercises

The grade in the Exercises Criteria depends on approved course exercises. List of categorised exercises and information on how to execute and pass exercises are available in the course CANVAS room. The exercises must be executed individually. The Exercises grade 5 and 5+ can make a difference for the final course grade (see below). In the Exercises module in LADOK, the grade 5 and 5+ both translates to grade 5.

Grade

Criteria

5+

All exercises in category A, B, C and D together with 7 exercises chosen from Category E approved.
Deadline Sun January 22 2023.

5

All exercises in category A, B and C together with 6 exercises chosen from Category E approved.
Deadline Sun January 22 2023.

4

All exercises in category A and B together with 4 exercises chosen from Category E approved.

All exercises in category A together with 2 exercises chosen from the Category E approved.
Deadline Fri November 25 2022

Final course grade

The final course grade (3: Pass; 4: pass with credit; 5: pass with distinction) is decided from the grade within each of the three criteria defined above. Criteria Project grade level 3 (Passed) is required to pass the course (minimum final course grade 3). The final course grade is then decided from the combination of the grade within Criteria Theory and Criteria Exercises as defined below.
